Unemployment: Day 13
Applications submitted: 73
Rejections received: 5
Number of times I’ve completely overhauled resume: 5
Good things from today:
After almost two weeks of processing our claim, my wife and I both (finally) have successfully submitted for unemployment. Pro-tip: If you’re unemployed, file ASAP. There’s so much fraud and it can take a few weeks before you are even able to file. And when it comes to having no income, every week counts.
I received a glowing recommendation from a former coworker on LinkedIn. Can’t stress enough what a difference this makes - if not in my chances of being hired, then definitely in my confidence.
I spent the entire day at my local library and managed to find some helpful services, content, etc.
The helpful stuff you (probably) care about:
If you’re in Ohio, check out Ohio Means Jobs for job listings. If you’ve filed for unemployment you probably already know this, but since ours just went through I didn’t know it until today.
Also for Ohioans, Ohio Means Jobs has a resource lab with internet and print capabilities. Your local library is also a great resource for this.
More Ohio - there are some training programs that may be covered if you qualify. Full disclosure, haven’t fully explored this yet, but there ya go.
Free for Ohio but a resource for all: Big Interview to help you prepare for interviews (especially if you’re like me and haven’t interviewed in a decade).
Free for Ohio: Resume help, career coaching, interview stuff, etc. available here.
Columbus residents, check out Per Scholas who (per their website) “offers hands-on technology training at no cost to learners throughout Columbus.”
Helpful if you’re like me and live in a single-car household. Lyft offers free rides for job interviews, training, etc (depending on your location and available funds, also haven’t fully explored this one yet).
Six Sigma offers a free white belt certification. Is it impressive? Probably not. But, it’s free.
Other general training/learning platforms that have some free stuff (and obviously a lot of paid stuff, too):
That’s it for today. Here’s to everyone finding the right job for them.
